Protein on a low calorie diet

I’m considering a low calorie diet but don’t want to risk losing muscle. Can I stop this by eating lots of protein? I was thinking about eating a lot of red meats for the protein, but might be better off drinking a couple protein shakes each day. How can I balance lots of protein calories and still have a low calorie diet? I want to make sure I get a good calorie balance, so I’ll also be eating fat calories and carb calories.

I have a smaller frame and I’m not too tall, but want to lose a few pounds and keep the muscle. I don’t have high calorie needs, so I’m thinking about a very low calorie diet?
